The National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA) has accepted Equinor's environmental plan for exploratory oil drilling in the

Great Australian Barrier Reef, which is the second of four approvals required before the start of the activity.

The first approval was granted in 2011 by a federal and state government commission.
NOPSEMA’s rigorous evaluation process took almost eight months and involved a range of experts with environmental, scientific and engineering experience.

According to the agency, conditions imposed for the approval of the plan were strict so to ensure a high level of environmental protection in recognition of the region's unique values and sensitivities.
