A study by four Brazilian researchers over the last two and a half years in the region of the Abrolhos Islands between the southern part of the state of Bahia and the northern part of the state of Espírito Santo can help in the recovery and management of exploitation of the Grouper, Snapper and Red Fish families. The work resulted in the scientific article, Spawning Patterns of Commercially Important Reef Fish, published in the magazine, Scientia Marina.

The research concluded that Groupers and Snappers produce more in July and August. The Red Fish produce in two periods: between September and October and between February and March. The principal reproduction areas were also identified. “We work with the view that it is possible to recover and maintain fish stock because we are aware, we create protected areas in the right places, and we implement necessary control measures for fishing,” says Guilherme Dutra, Marine Program director of the NGO, International-Brazilian Conservation, which supported this study.
