The Senate is discussing two bills to raise taxes on the amount of cigarettes. The object of the proposals is to reduce smoking in the country. However, parliamentarians linked to the governing base warned that the measure could increase the contraband product even more in Brazil, a billion-dollar (Brazilian currency) business that includes nearly 16% of the cigarettes sold in the country.

Instead of suggesting a rate increase, the National Agency for Sanitary Surveillance (ANVISA) supports educational campaigns and measures that restrict cigarette propaganda, like prohibiting exposed cigarette packs points of sale and including warning labels about the negative effects of smoking on cigarette packs.
