With the manatee being threatened with extinction in the Pacific Ocean in the next 40 years, the United Nations Organization Program for the Environment (Pnuma) launched a project for the preservation of the species. The initiative launched in the Republic of Palau in Oceania is aimed at educating local communities to change their behavior.

According to the UN, the main causes for the threat to the manatee are hunting and fishing carried out directly and by mistake. Herbivorous aquatic mammals, this animal – which mainly lives on the coast of Australia and the United Arab Emirates – helps protect other species such as whales, dolphins and turtles.
