The auditory system of marine animal is affected by sound pollution from ships and oil drilling. The conclusion is from part of a study headed by the biotechnical engineer, Michel André from the Cataluña Technical University in Barcelona, Spain. The research analyzed the sound effects on four species of squid and octopi. Exposure to noise caused swelling in the nerve fibers of the animals.

“If the exposure is short with relatively low intensity used in our studies can cause severe trauma, then the impact of noise pollution with high continuous intensity in the ocean can be considerable,” stated André.
