The only country in the south Atlantic with coral reefs, Brazil will be the stage of an experiment to test the effects of climatic changes on the planet. At Arraial d'Ajuda, on the coast of the state of Bahia, researchers will install equipment to control lighting going into the water, simulating the impact of global heating.

"The coral reefs are considered excellent indicators of climatic changes," stated Professor Clóvis Castro, coordinator of the Coral Vivo project, which develops research and is sponsored by Petrobras. Previous experiments show that temperature increase and ocean acidity makes algae produce substances toxic to the coral.
