The 5th International Conference on Marine Debris, in Honolulu, Hawaii gave a warning on the effects that litter in the oceans may have on the food chain - including for humans - and on the world economy. A study released during the meeting indicated that more than 260 marine species suffer from eating litter. Among them are 86% of the types of sea turtles, 44% are birds and 43% are mammals.

Small pieces of plastic that have disintegrated in the water were found in whales, dolphins, crustaceans and mollusks. During the conference, a report from the North-American Sea turtle organization showed a worrisome estimate: of the nearly 1 million plastic bags used by consumers everyday, 0.5% ends up in the sea.
