Called the River Islands, a conservation project designed by the NGO Mar Adentro is starting to bear fruit in the archipelago Cagarras, a group of five islands and rocks three miles from Ipanema Beach in Rio de Janeiro. With R$3.6 million from Petrobras, researchers from three universities conducted mapping of flora and fauna of the area, where they found, for example, that there is a species of turtle and endangered types of sponges that fight bacteria.

In the second half of the year monitoring of fishing in the archipelago and cleaning the bottom of the sea will be started. The project includes environmental workshops in schools, production of a documentary and training courses for fishermen and for sustainable tourism agents.
