The western part of the state of Parana, which borders Paraguay, is one of the main points where gangs engage in cigarette smuggling. In addition to intensifying operations to seize illegal products, the Federal Police has adopted a new initiative: they have called on other institutions in the region to form a united front to combat cigarette smuggling.

The West Paraná State University was the first to join. A team of researchers began a study on the components in the contraband cigarettes. Lawmakers also have been working on drafting laws to make harsher penalties for the crime of smuggling.
