With 106 beaches and located at one of the most beautiful points on the Brazilian coast - a few hours from Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo – Ilha Grande will bid for the title of World Natural Heritage from UNESCO, the UN agency. For this, one of the proposals from the group responsible for the application is to limit the number of visitors to the site, as in other wildlife sanctuaries, like Fernando de Noronha, off the coast of the state of Pernambuco.

A file will be submitted by the end of the year to show the scientific importance of the ecosystem of Ilha Grande. In addition to access control of tourists, the initiative includes a project to install a sewage network. One of the concerns of environmentalists is the proximity of two port terminal nuclear power plants with the heavy traffic of oil tankers.
