Twelve police officers are among 14 people arrested on Wednesday (26) during Operation Prima Malus (Evil Smoke, in Latin) to combat gang accused of involvement in cigarette smuggling in Mato Grosso do Sul, a state that borders with Paraguay. The neighboring country is the main supplier of illegal cigarettes into Brazil. Four more police officers suspected of ties to the gang remain at large.

The involvement of police in the crime started to be investigated a year ago by intelligence agencies of the Mato Grosso do Sul Military Police. They are accused of accepting bribes to facilitate the entry of illegal smuggling and extortion to release withheld shipments.
