Since 1991, the Antarctic is a continent protected by international laws. However, there is no similar legislation to protect marine life in that region of the planet. Therefore, a group of environmentalists who are part of the Antarctic Ocean Alliance started the mobilization of firm commitments to preserve the seas in the South Pole.

The buffer zone proposed by the alliance with Amnesty International, Greenpeace and WWF covers all around the icy continent and includes the Ross Sea. The goal is to help preserve some 10,000 species, including the emperor penguin, the minke whale, seals, and giant squid.
