Cigarette smuggling is just not a problem limited to South America. Europe also mobilized to curb this criminal practice. The main route of entry of illegal products is the border of Poland. Last year alone, 750 million cigarettes - 100 million more than in 2009 - from Eastern Europe were seized in the region, where specialized gangs operate.

Tobacco is the most smuggled product in Europe. Estimates indicate that 10% of cigarettes that circulate in European Union countries are "falsified", which implies a loss of 7 million Euros in taxes. To slow down smuggling, various types of equipment such as scanners, detectors and X-ray machines were installed at the Polish border.
