Regulatory News

The Senate approved a bill that prohibits smoking in closed spaces, whether public or private throughout the country. This includes specified environments for cigarette smoking – the so-called fumodromos - will be prohibited. For the proposal to become law it only needs President Rousseff’s signature.

The senators also approved regulations further restricting cigarette advertising at points of sale. Additionally, it was decided that starting in 2016, warnings about the dangers of smoking will have to cover 30% of the front of cigarette packs, which currently are printed on the backs.
