Regulatory News

The Minister of Health, Alexandre Padilha, believes that cigarette smoking among young people will decrease when the new smoke-free law goes into effect. He said the ministry will promote radio and television campaigns to orient the population on following the new rules.

Among the measures that began last month is the prohibition on smoking in enclosed public access, such as bars, restaurants, nightclubs and even the so-called designated facilities, fumodromos, areas reserved for smokers. Before, this restriction only existed in the states of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Paraná.

Other decisions with the new legislation is the gradual increase in taxes on tobacco products, prohibition of tobacco advertising at events like music festivals and sporting events, and increased space for messages on cigarette packs warning of the dangers of smoking.
