At the end of 2011, an expedition of Brazilian researchers visited an underground mountain range located in the south, a thousand miles off the Brazilian coast. Known as the Rio Grande Rise, the geological formation has a biodiversity still unknown to scientists.

Water samples were collected at different depths between 500 and 3,660 meters. The expedition also found several species of birds and marine mammals. Scientists have expectations to study the potential of biotechnology in deep water and how climate change affects the ocean.
