Researchers from the Humpback Whale Institute worked from a scientific research cruise ship last week to observe the behavior and collect fat and skin samples from Humpback Whales. The expedition, which crossed the coast between Espirito Santo and Bahia, observed 25 groups of whales, a total of 75 individuals.

The month of July is usually when the humpbacks come to the Brazilian coast after swimming 4,500 km from Antarctica. The Abrolhos Islands is the most popular region for them because of shallow, warm waters, ideal for breeding and nursing their young.

The information collected will be used for scientific research. In the fat of these whales, for example, researchers found sex hormones. During the cruise, dolphins were also seen interacting with the humpback whales.
