Found dead at the end of last month in a series of reefs near the Abrolhos, off the southern coast of Bahia, a humpback whale was the first recorded stranding of marine mammals in 2012. July is the start of the season for humpback whales in Brazil, which can increase strandings of the species.

This year through November, 10,000 whales along the Brazilian coast are expected. To deal with stranding cases of whales, dolphins, seals or sea lions, the Rescue Humpback Whale Project Program, funded by Petrobras and in partnership with Project Aquatic Mammals, has an emergency telephone number, which operates 24 hours a day.
