On the 26th and 27th of July, monitoring by flight made by the Project Right Whale gave a count of 103 right whale sightings, a record number, along the southern coast of Brazil: 62 on the 26th, between Imbituba, in the south of Santa Catarina, and Torres in Rio Grande do Sul; and 41 on the 27th between Imbituba and Lagoinha East, in Florianopolis.

Of the 103 individual whales, 32 were calves - one of them albino. Monitoring has been done for ten years, since July 2002, and the record this year could mean an increase in the population of right whales.
