With expeditions in boats and fly-overs, a group of researchers initiated a project to find out how many monk seals and sea lions there are in the region of the Ilha dos Lobos, an environmental protection area near Torres, Rio Grande do Sul. They are a part being studied by a group students from Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos, the NGO Right Whale Project and the National Center for Research and Conservation of Aquatic Mammals (CMA) from the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio).

Information obtained during the research is important for the development of the management plan for the protected area. The fly-overs of the region allowed the observation, for example, of more young male sea lions, in addition to the record showing a single elephant seal.
