The Azedinha Beach in Buzios, one of Brazil's most famous resorts, had a special attraction on Tuesday (November 6): An elephant seal weighing 300k. The seal spent the day between dips in the sea near bathers and long rests on the sand. According to biologists who were there, the mammal was in good health, but looked tired.

The most likely origin of the elephant seal is Patagonia, at the southern tip of Argentina. It is common for other species to come to southern Brazil in search of warmer waters, but the appearance is rarer in Buzios. The previous recording was in 2007, when a similar cetacean reached Joao Fernandes Beach. Since it was too exhausted to return to sea, it was taken to Rio de Janeiro and then returned to the ocean in the south of the country.
