Regulatory News

The main breeding area of humpback whales in the Southern Hemisphere, the Abrolhos Marine National Park, in southern Bahia, has tighter rules. The new rules affect, for example, tourism companies interested in exploring the visiting services for the region. Control on diving activities, hiking trails and for flora and fauna observation will also be changed.

All vessels will have to be identified with stickers provided by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio), a Ministry of the Environment agency. Visits need to be scheduled in advance and will be preceded by a presentation from a park monitor. For diving a professional will have to be present for each group of six people or two for each group of eight. Hiking will only be permitted if led by park monitors or volunteers.
