Since 2010, biologists from the Ilhas do Rio project have not sighted dolphins near the Cagarras Islands, a group of islands located just off the coast of the most famous beaches of Rio de Janeiro, Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon. In the past, cetaceans would consistently appear in the months of August and December.

Biologists from the Ilhas do Rio project who are studying marine life in the region point out the increased pollution and vessels as the main hypotheses for the disappearance of dolphins from Cagarras.
