Opened in December on the coast of Ceará, the Rehabilitation Center for Marine Mammals has become a benchmark in South America in caring for newborn dolphin and manatee calves. The site is administrated by the Association for Research and Conservation of Aquatic Ecosystems (Aquasis) and is sponsored by the Petrobras Environmental Program.

The Rehabilitation Center has swimming pools and tanks for rehabilitating cetaceans and a technical area with a laboratory, clinic and kitchen for preparing food for the animals. Additionally, there are environmental education activities developed with residents of nearby communities. The manatee is an endangered species.
