The government plans to introduce a change that will be in effect for the next auction of oil and gas. The idea is to require the companies that win bids to drill onshore blocks to drill deeper in order to map deposits of unconventional gas, shale gas.

According to the Secretary of Energy and Mines, Marco Antonio Almeida, the current price of oil and gas on the international market is making shale gas exploration attractive. The government should include onshore blocks in the Paraná River basin, which stretches from the state of Mato Grosso to the state of Rio Grande do Sul in an auction for this year.
