Organizations defending the environment and marine life warned about the threat of extinction of the Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphin, also known as the Chinese white dolphin, on the coast of Hong Kong. Between 2003 and 2011, the number of the species sighted in the region fell from 158 to 78. And the current population should be even lower according to estimates by the Dolphin Preservation Society of Hong Kong.

According to environmentalists, the decline in population in recent years has been caused by overfishing, increased vessel traffic and pollution in the sea.
