Dolphins are the animals with the longest social memory on record. A study by the University of Chicago indicates that these marine mammals are able to recognize someone even after 20 years. The research was based on 43 dolphins living in six zoos and water parks near Chicago.

These institutions were chosen because they usually exchange dolphins. Since each animal has a characteristic whistle, like a personal signature, the study found that cetaceans react differently when listening to recordings of dolphin whistles with whom they have had previous contact, even from many years before.

"When they heard a dolphin who they knew, they often approached the speaker rapidly," explained Jason Bruck, who led the study.
