Brazil fell from fifth to tenth place in world export of honey in the past two years. The main reason is the drought that has been punishing the main region of production, the Northeast.

In 2012, there was a 90% drop in production in some states, and the abandonment of hives reached 60%, according to Maria Fatima Vidal, research coordinator at the Northeast Technical Office of Economic Studies.

Of the nine states in the region, about 46 thousand small beekeepers make a living off the activity and are responsible for 40% of honey production in the country - in seasons with a normal rainfall index.
