After 11 years in the care of the National Centre for Research and Conservation of Aquatic Mammals (CMA), a manatee approximately 13 years old was reintroduced into nature. The animal, which had been found stranded on the coast of Ceará when he was a calf, was released in the Environmental Protection Area (APA) Coral Coast, in the state of Alagoas.

Even after being released, the manatee will continue to be monitored through a GPS system that sends signals via satellite. Thus, researchers can study the aquatic mammal’s behavior habits and movement. The CMA base is following 12 animals that have been let loose.
