A semi-albino baby whale was sighted last week during an overflight of the coast of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. This was the first semi-albino in the region this year. Generally, a single calf of the species with these characteristics is observed each reproductive season on the Brazilian coast.

The flyovers are part of a project to monitor whales. The animals are identified through photographs and the information becomes part of a census. Experts from government agencies such as the National Centre for Research and Conservation of Aquatic Mammals, and non-governmental organizations such as the Whale Project participate in the study.

This year, 123 of these whales were sighted in a stretch of 280km, which runs from Florianopolis, capital of Santa Catarina, to the city of Torres, Rio Grande do Sul.
