The high demand for shark fins in Southeast Asia is considered to be the main reason for the death of about 15,000 dolphins on the coast of Peru each year. These aquatic mammals are used as bait for sharks. The fins are mainly exported to Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Peru condemns the illegal fishing of sharks and dolphins, which are protected species in the South American country. The deputy minister of Fisheries, Paul Phompiu explains that you need authorization to export fins, but most of the extraction is done by poachers. In Peru, there are 72 registered vessels fishing for sharks. However, according to the NGO Mundo Azul, it is estimated that there are about 500 vessels working irregularly.
