Understanding the behavior of right whales through the sound they produce is the main objective of a study by biologists from the National Center for Research and Conservation of Whales Project and the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN). From their vessel, researchers observe the habits of cetaceans while capturing the sounds emitted by the animals.

The number of whales that frequent the coast of Rio Grande do Norte and the impact of human activities on the species can be calculated with the results. The initiative is a continuation of a study begun in 2001, which included a partnership with the University of Pennsylvania.
