Bee pollination produces larger, redder and firmer strawberries. This is the conclusion reached in a study, released last week, by researchers at the University of Goettingen in Germany. The study compared strawberries pollinated by bees and pollination by wind.

When pollen is carried by bees, strawberries weigh 11% more than those that are wind-pollinated and 30% more than the self-pollinated fruit. Furthermore, the strawberries have a higher durability - from 16 to 26 hours - according to the calculations of the research.

The study highlights that 90% of strawberries cannot be sold after four days stored in boxes. With fruit pollinated by bees, losses due to spoiled strawberries are reduced by as much as 11%.
