The bottlenose dolphin species is the focus of a preservation project on the coast of Rio Grande do Sul. The cetaceans living in the waters where the Atlantic Ocean meets Lagoa dos Patos are identified and monitored by biologists, oceanographers and students from the Federal University of Rio Grande of the South (UFRS).

Although the region offers plenty of food for the dolphins, there are serious threats to the lives of these aquatic mammals: fishing with nets and heavy boat traffic.

Researchers are studying about 90 dolphins that live in the 15 kilometer² region, with two-thirds maintained by a conservation unit. In this space which is used by animals to rest and play, fishermen cannot use nets and boat traffic is controlled.
