The first week of 2014 was marked by the death of 39 pilot whales that became stranded near a Golden Bay beach on the South Island of New Zealand. The cetaceans became beached because of the low tide. This factor and the intensity of the winds hampered the rescue operation.

According to biologists, 12 whales died naturally. The others had to be euthanized to avoid more suffering since it would be impossible to take the animals back to sea.
