In an article published in the journal, Nature, British researchers say they have evidence that wild bees are being affected by diseases spread by bees bred in captivity to produce honey. The mortality of these insects, primarily responsible for natural pollination process in the ecosystem has become a global concern.

In reaching this conclusion, scientists at Royal Holloway University in London led wild bees to a lab and exposed them to a type of virus and a parasite that usually affect the bees cared for by beekeepers. With this kind of exposure, the life expectancy of the insects decreases by a third.
