Russian troops gained new members after the merger of Crimea to Russia: dolphins and sea lions that were being trained by the Naval Forces of Ukraine. Strange as it may seem, these aquatic mammals were already used in the region before the disintegration of the Soviet Union to locate submarine weapons, objects and people in the sea.

Abandoned with the demise of the Soviet Union, the training program of these animals had been taken over by the Ukraine in 2012 and went on to be performed in an aquarium located on a military base in Sevastopol. According to scientists, the Dolphins have a natural reflex to push individuals who are drowning toward the surface. However, the biggest advantage is using the dolphins’ natural sonar to locate objects and weapons.
