Teams from the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio), a Ministry of the Environment agency, started the surveillance season on the coast of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil, to protect right whales. The region is an Environmental Protection Area for that cetacean species which lives there at this time of year.

All vessels sighted in the region are inspected and have their fishing permits verified. ICMBio professionals warn ships to be careful while navigating in the area of the whales’ migratory route. The main goal of the surveillance is to prevent illegal fishing of the aquatic mammals.
