The poor performance of the Brazilian team’s striker Fred (Frederico Chaves Guedes) in the World Cup led residents in Vila Velha, a city located in the coastal state of Espirito Santo, to baptize an elephant seal found on the beach. During the football tournament, Fred was heavily criticized for not doing much on the field.

The sea lion, with a length of 3.5 meters and over 880 pounds, was found near a lighthouse on the beach in Vila Velha on July 8. According to biologists on the Marine Animal Help and Rescue Team, the sea lion looked tired and had probably gotten lost coming back with its group from Antarctica. Fred’s presence attracted many onlookers until on the 13th, the last day of the World Cup, the cetacean returned to the sea alone.
