Aiming to transform the southern part of the Atlantic Ocean into a location that ensures the preservation of whales in the long term, the governments of Brazil and Argentina began a project to create a sanctuary for cetaceans in the region. The proposal has support from Uruguay, South Africa, New Zealand, the United States and the European Union countries.

The proposal was launched by Argentina and gained support from Brazil. Last March, after a seminar that discussed the issue, governmental representatives from both countries began meeting with researchers and members of NGOs to improve the project.
