For the first time, a team from the Center for Aquatic Mammals (CMA), an agency of the Ministry of Environment, rescued a newborn manatee with some injuries stranded on Pratagy Beach, in the state of Alagoas.

Experts kept the animal in a tributary of the river which flows to the beach for 24 hours, hoping to locate the mother of the calf. Since no adult manatee was sighted, the specialists took the aquatic mammal to the Rehabilitation Center for Wild Animals in Itamaracá, Pernambuco to undergo clinical and laboratory examinations. After treatment, the calf should be taken care of until it is in condition to get back to nature within two years.
