Peruvian government officials have launched an investigation to determine the cause of death of more than 500 fur seals found on a beach located in the north last week. According to the Ecological and Environmental Police, there are complaints that the animals may have been poisoned by shellfish fishermen, since aquatic mammals approach the coast in search of seafood to feed.

At the beginning of this month, in another region of the Peruvian north coast, 187 fur seals, four dolphins, four marine turtles and more than 50 dead pelicans were found.
