The deaths of two manatees in different parts of the northeast coast, within 48 hours left environmental authorities concerned. Both animals were monitored after being reintroduced to nature by the National Center for Research and Conservation of Aquatic Mammals (CMA), the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio).

The Federal Police are investigating the case because the cetaceans were killed intentionally and this characterizes environmental crime. The first occurred in Alagoas, where a manatee was shot in the head. Two days later, in Sergipe, the other aquatic mammal succumbed to his injuries after being beaten.

According to the CMA, an agency of the Ministry of Environment which conducts research and awareness campaigns to save the manatee, there are currently only 500 of these animals on the Brazilian coast.
