During the World Park Congress from November 12 to 19 in Sydney, Australia, governments of several countries committed to create or increase marine-protected areas. The event has been sponsored by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) since 1962.

Authorities in Bangladesh, for example, have committed to creating the first marine park in the country, to protect whales, dolphins and other species. The Russian government intends to increase marine protected area by 28%. South Africa already has plans to triple the size of its protected coastal area within ten years. Australia, Gabon, Madagascar and French Polynesia were other countries that announced investments in marine conservation.
