Head of the Japanese delegation at the International Whaling Commission (IWC), Joji Morishita classified the prohibition of his country’s hunting whales as "eco-imperialism”. He said the decision by the Hague Tribunal is an imposition of a system of values over another and is based on emotion, not science.

"If you ask an ordinary Japanese citizen about whaling, he will tell you he does not eat whale meat, but he does not like the idea of people who eat beef or pork telling us what we should stop eating. What is the difference between a cow and a whale," argued Morishita. Despite the decision of the International Court of Justice, the Japanese government plans to resume whaling season in 2015-2016, claiming the activity is for scientific purposes.
