Japanese Ships Return to Antarctica, but Will Not Hunt Whales
|
Japan's fisheries agency announced that the country's boats will return to do research on whales in Antarctica, but will not hunt them. In a statement, the agency reported that "the harpoons were removed from the vessels as a measure against catching whales."
According to the agency, the objective of the expeditions is to observe cetaceans and get skin samples - a non-lethal activity. Japan had stopped the hunting of whales in the Antarctic during the 2014-2015 season after receiving a decision from the International Court of Justice in The Hague. |
