Last week a team from the Aquatic Mammals Center (JMC) from the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) released the first manatee release back into nature in 2015. The release, which took place on the beach of Porto das Pedras Alagoas, aims to recover the species threatened with extinction.

The nearly five-year-old female manatee had been rescued when she was a few days old. She was severely weakened and was taken by airplane to the base of CMA base in Itamaracá, Pernambuco, where she was rehabilitated. It was the 29th manatee rescued and returned to nature by the Center. Even after being released, aquatic mammals are still monitored with microchips and satellite transmitters.
