Developing a methodology to measure factors affecting bee health and causing premature bee deaths is the goal of a joint survey between Brazilian and Australian scientists. The work involves the national research agency in Australia and the Vale Technology Institute of Belem, Para, and studies hives in the Amazon and in Tasmania.

"We have managed to establish a kind of bee health index which measures the impact of any debilitating factor on the insects. This may be important in getting to the cause of the phenomenon known as Colony Collapse Disorder Colony (CCD)," said Paulo de Souza, one of the research coordinators.

About 400 bees are being monitored using a micro-sensor installed on the thorax of the insects which reveals details on their behavior.
