Even after passing the reproductive stage, orcas females between the ages of 60 and 80 have a key role in the preservation of the species. According to research from the University of Exeter in England, older orcas know their environment well and in times of food shortage, they guide the younger whales to the food.

Scientists observed 750 hours of film recordings of orcas along the UK coast and found that elderly females assume leadership in periods with lower food supply.
