Some of the major green areas situated right in the city center of Rio de Janeiro are being reforested with the help of stingless bees. Wooden boxes with roofs that serve as home to colonies of this insect species were installed in places such as Tijuca National Park, the Park of the Catacombs, Bosque da Barra, Chico Mendes Park, Marapendi Park, and Pedra Branca Park.

The bees land on flowers, extract pollen and deposit it, which will give rise to new plants in other locations. According to researchers, the stingless species have higher pollination capacity which makes it the most efficient process in reforestation.
